Black Square String Quartet and Shugorei joined forces again for our favourite project – The Sounds of Chow Gar, to be performed at Port Fairy Spring Music Festival 2026. We premiered The Sounds of Chow Gar on the 16th of February 2024 at Queensland Conservatorium of Music. It’s now travelling to Victoria in 2026.
The film captured the Chinese martial art forms performed by senior members of Australian School of Kung Fu & Tai Chi. Tom is a student of this school, and has learned kung fu for many years. Four members of the school, including Sifu Guy Suetin, kindly agreed to be in the film.
This project spotlights the implicit connection between human form, movement and musical motion and rhythm. The kung fu forms are intrinsically rhythmical, and the music has been created to map precisely to the kung fu gestures: every physical expression is mapped to a rhythm, a beat or a pulse.
Though the kung fu is projected as cinema, the music is performed live on stage, with performers playing precisely in time with the cinematic movement.
Noz recently got Xylosynth and this concert will be the debut of our new Xylosynth!!
Noz and Tom are excited to go back to Port Fairy Spring Music Festival since 2022!
